Vegan Mustard

Making your own Vegan Mustard is easy, and it’s a great way to control the ingredients. This recipe creates a tangy, flavorful mustard that’s perfect for sandwiches, burgers, and dipping.

Serves: 8
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup yellow mustard seeds
  • 1/4 cup white wine vinegar (or apple cider vinegar for a milder flavor)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (or agave syrup)
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric (for color and flavor)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, for a spicy kick)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Mustard Seeds:
  • In a bowl, combine the mustard seeds and water. Let the mixture sit for at least 1 hour, or overnight if you want a milder mustard. This will help soften the seeds and release their flavor.
  1. Blend the Ingredients:
  • After soaking, add the mustard seeds, vinegar, maple syrup, turmeric, salt, garlic powder (if using), and cayenne pepper (if using) to a blender or food processor.
  1. Blend Until Smooth:
  • Pulse or blend until you reach your desired consistency. For a smoother mustard, blend longer. For a coarser mustard, blend less.
  1. Taste and Adjust:
  • Taste the mustard and adjust the seasoning. Add more maple syrup for sweetness, more vinegar for tang, or cayenne for extra heat.
  1. Let It Rest:
  • Let the mustard sit for at least an hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld together. The longer it sits, the more flavorful it becomes.
  1. Store:
  • Transfer the mustard to an airtight jar or container. Store it in the fridge for up to 2-3 weeks.

Tips:

  • For Different Flavors: Experiment by adding other ingredients like smoked paprika, crushed horseradish, or dill to give your mustard unique twists.
  • Texture Preference: If you prefer a smoother mustard, blend longer, or strain out any large seeds.
  • Sweetness: Adjust the sweetness level by increasing or decreasing the amount of maple syrup or agave.

This Vegan Mustard is simple to make and adds a tangy, zesty flavor to your dishes. It’s perfect for any vegan or plant-based lifestyle and works great as a condiment for hot dogs, sandwiches, or salads!
